Beautiful print, slight yellowing of the paper on the right borderPublished by Uchida ArtCa.1945Nishiki-eShin HangaTomikichiro Tokuriki, an engraver from the end of the Meiji period to the Heise period, comes from a lineage that ran a Nishi Honganji painting workshop in the city of Kyoto.After studying at the Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts, he graduated from the Kyoto City College of Painting in 1923 and studied under Bakusen Tsuchida.In 1928, he submitted his Japanese paintings to the National Association of Japanese Painters and won the Chogyu Prize.The following year, 1929, he founded the Kyoto Sosaku Hanga association with Benji Asada, Takeji Asano, Tobei Kamei and other artists and won the Kokuga Prize.He then began research into Buddhist prints.At this time, Tomikichiro began making woodcuts and participated in the doujinshi (kind of collections published by amateurs) “Han” with Unichi Hiratsuka and Shiko Munakata.In 1931, with Asada, Asano and Kamei, he published a collection of prints entitled "Sosaku Hanga Kajin" taken from Kiichi Uchida's Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi.He also launched the magazine "Taiwan Print", a popular and artistic journal, on the recommendation of Anmura Tsuchida.After the Second World War, he founded the “Matsuku” engraving studio and trained apprentices.He produced more popular prints in 1968 and organized several personal exhibitions.In 1972, he created a collection of 12 saints' footprints for Nishi Honganji Temple.For his various creations and all of his work, he has received numerous distinctions including the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th class and the Cultural Merit Award from the city of Kyoto...
