Kaoru Kawano was born in Hokkaido and studied art at the Kawabata School. He was one of the artists who contributed to the worldwide success of the sosaku hanga movement after World War II.
His reputation spread beyond Japan through solo exhibitions in North America and other countries. He distinguished himself with his refined depictions of animals and children, combining elements of Western aesthetics with traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques.
