Nishiki-e

Sosaku Hanga

Born in 1953 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, southern Japan, he moved to Kyoto for his higher education and graduated from Doshisha University in 1975. It was there that he discovered the early prints of Azechi Umetaro and Asano Takeji.
He began his studies in printmaking in Kyoto in 1977, then spent a year in Boston at the Kaji Aso studio. In the early 1980s, he resided in Kyoto where he held his first solo exhibition at the Heian Gallery. In 1988, he moved to Nagasaki and settled in a large house halfway up a mountain overlooking the ships below. There, he found inspiration in contemplating the sea, the moon, and the many cats that lived there. He has resided in Fukuoka, a city in northern Kyushu, since 1997.

Gashu's prints are whimsical, imbued with innocence and playfulness, and very colorful. His favorite subject is the wildlife around him: birds, cats, insects...

Solo exhibitions in Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Wakayama, Osaka, and Kyoto.
