Louis Gallait was born in 1810 in Tournai and died in1887 in Schaerbeek Strongly influenced by Pierre Paul Rubens, José de Ribera, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Gallait created a school of historical painting, which was particularly attached to the truth of the local color and to the dramatic interest of the scenes, thus establishing his fame as a painter of history, portraits and genre not only in Belgium but also throughout Europe.
