Iwata Sentarō was born in Kurofune-cho, Asakusa-ku, Tokyo (now Kotobuki, Taito-ku, Tokyo).
He began his career in Kyoto as a disciple of Kikuchi Keigetsu, a Japanese painter.
Returning to Tokyo in 1919, he became a protégé of Hakubunkan and produced illustrations for its magazine "Kodan Magazine," and later for "Bungei Club."
At this time, around 1920, he became a disciple of Ito Shinsui.
In 1961, he was awarded a medal with a purple ribbon for his work.
