Shimokuren is a magnolia with purple flowers. Botanically, it is called Mokuren. Its leaves are obovate. Although smooth on the front, they are provided with cilia on the back. Around April, it opens a six-petaled flower, accompanied by new leaves. The flower is dark purple. At the base of its petals are three small green calyxes. Like Haku-mokuren, it is of Chinese origin.
