An interesting etching published by Plancher de Lanoë, a bookseller, publisher, and pamphleteer in Rio de Janeiro. Born in Le Mans, the son of a prosecutor at the city's presidial court and a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, he was successively a journeyman type founder in Paris with Joseph Gillé (1798), then a journeyman typesetter and foreman for several Parisian printing houses. He established himself as a bookseller during the First Restoration (1814), applying for a bookseller's license in June 1816, but only obtaining it on June 21, 1820, after an investigation. He had run-ins with the royal police, particularly due to the clandestine distribution of "Le Cri du peuple français" (November 1815). He notably published numerous political writings, as well as the complete works of Voltaire in 44 volumes (1817-1822), wrote several memoirs in connection with booksellers' lawsuits, and eventually embarked for Brazil, which had just proclaimed its independence (1822). He was very active and, as early as April 1824, established a publishing house and printing press in Rio de Janeiro, becoming bookseller to His Majesty the Emperor of Brazil (1826). He returned to France with his family in February 1834.
He was known to have lived in Paris between 1814 and 1824 at various addresses: 14 Rue Serpente [1814-1817], and Rue Poupée [1815]. - Rue Poupée, No. 7 [1818-1820]
