This residence, designated a National Tangible Cultural Property, "Otaru Kihinkan (Former Aoyama Villa)," was built by Masakichi, the second head of the Aoyama family, who had amassed a vast fortune through herring fishing.
Matsumi Yaozo was closely associated with the postwar printmaking movement in northern Japan. Born in Hakodate, Hokkaido, he participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those of the Japan Print Association and the Dōten exhibitions, and later worked in association with the Hokkaido Shimbunsha print shop and the studio of the Kyoto-based publisher Chikuhōdō.
