Having created Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji in the 1940s in the Shin-Hanga style, he decided to revisit the theme after World War II in a more personal style, sosaku-hanga, which he titled "Thirty-six New Views of Mount Fuji."

Lake Kawaguchi lies north of Mount Fuji on the Japanese island of Honshu, located in Yamanashi Prefecture. It is the most famous and northernmost of the Fujigoko lakes. It is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
