LA FEMME DU TISSERAND SAINT JEAN DE MONT
BELTRAND TONY ( 1847-1904 )Nice proof on Japan paper.Minor soiling, slight fold in the upper right corner."Among the French engravers who pioneered water-based color wood engraving was Lepère's friend and collaborator, Tony Beltrand. In 1896, he founded with Lepère the magazine L'Image, the aim of which was to defend xylography. In 1897, he exhibited in Paris a series of ten studies of women in regional costumes. They are extremely rare and the print runs had to be limited to a few copies, printed by hand, in water. Several have the particularity of including relief effects by embossing, highlighting for example the foam of a wave or indicating the texture of a fabric (fig. 3). This very precious process was inspired by Beltrand by the surimono, prints which enjoyed particular prestige among Western collectors, and of which he himself owned fine copies."in : Le rapprochement franco-japonais dans l’entre-deux-guerresConférences de la Maison franco-japonaiseUne leçon japonaise : la gravure sur bois en couleurs en France, 1889-1939Philippe Le Stum, 2014https://doi.org/10.4000/ebisu.1484..

MYRRHA, FILLE DU ROI DE CHYPRE CINYRAS ET MERE D'ADONIS
ROCHE PIERRE (1855-1922)Nice Proof"Pierre Roche is an active and pioneering figure in the revival of graphic arts at the end of the 19th century. Protean artist, sculptor, painter, ceramist, medalist and engraver, he experiments in the field of printmaking original processes which bring all together These functions. Decompartmentalizing the decorative arts, he perfected new techniques such as stamped watercolor, gypsography and gypsotype, or eglomized papers.""In 1892, Pierre Roche, fascinated by the qualities of Japanese paper, began by drawing his prints in relief on hollow plaster; then he colored with a brush each proof. He gave these monotypes the name of stamped watercolors. He then grew. the process a little further and then uses the plaster matrix in the manner of a wood: the plaster is engraved like a light bas-relief and at the same time inked. The moistened paper, compressed by hand, comes to look for on the reliefs of the plaster at the same time the ink and the modeled. We thus obtain an embossed print of a great softness in its grain and its colors. The colored iridescence evokes the ceramic. Obviously the fragility of the plaster prohibits important prints. To remedy to this, the artist replaces the plaster with copper or steel, giving birth to gypsotypies, all marked with the artist's monogram. LE POITEVIN EUGENE ( 1806-1870 )"Quite different is Eugène Le Poitevin, the marine painter, who popularized a very different genre but whose impact was no less great. Proceeding directly from the Mephistopheles of Faust and the bizarre tendencies of the romantic school, the devils of this artist came to throw a picturesque note (...). The Devils, Little Devils, Devilish Oddities, More Devils; It was under these titles that the brown-covered albums of Le Poitevin spread everywhere that Bayalos soon imitated with his Devils and Michel Delaporte with his Diabolical-phantasmagorical Recreations. White devils and black devils followed by red devils and green devils. The devil slipped everywhere, committing a thousand incongruities (...) always having at his service an incalculable number of small imps running erroneously and through the leaves."Scattered redness, spots, tiny and short tear in the lower margin..

ROWLANDSON THOMAS ( 1756-1827 )The dance of death: the death blow. 1816.Rowlandson's "The English dance of death" was a cooperative venture. Apart from himself, who produced the drawings between 1814 and 1816, William Combe and Rudolph Ackermann were important participants in this production. William Combe wrote two volumes of verses which were intended to facilitate the understanding of the images. Nevertheless, the two lines of text that appear below the images are thought to have been composed by Rowlandson himself. Rudolph Ackermann, who had a print shop in the Strand, promoted and published the prints after Rowlandson's designs. Halo in the sky, a few points of foxing, cut at the edge of the copper, traces of an old adhesive in the top margin...

JOUETS ET SABLIER
ISAAC PROSPER ALPHONSE ( 1858-1924 )One of his first and rare brush-colored woodcuts. To be compared to the Yosokukangu.Proof bearing the artist's red stamp. Some scattered foxing, slight oxidation when opening an old master key. Before 1906I.F.F: 19"The first known engravings by Isaac, drypoint and aquatint in black and color, date back to 1900(...).The introduction of color, essential for Isaac since it was already a central issue for his dyed fabrics, confirms his total immersion in Japanese art(...).The art that Alphonse Isaac practiced “with the most constancy and passion” was Japanese-style wood engraving. He practiced it for around twenty years, from around 1905 until his death in 1924. The assimilation of the Japanese technique was the fruit of a long process, many years of study and experimentation. After the two alabaster engravings, he made six wood engravings of which only the blacks were printed, the colors still being applied with a brush. These undated engravings were undoubtedly made before 1906, two years before the lessons of a professional Japanese engraver and some time before the first dinner invitation from the Friends of Japanese Art. They represent Japanese toys accompanied by floral motifs. Deciphering these prints with unusual compositions is quite difficult because they remain unique in his work, even if they already include the main characteristics of Isaac's style, notably the taste for Japanese objects, the ornamental floral motif, the thick black line , the colors, used in solid color, finally the signature and sometimes the use of a small black swastika. This mark, which he borrows from Hokusaï and Totoya Hokkeï (1780-1850), accentuates the link with Japanese art and seems to mean “engraved and printed using Japanese processes”. He presented them in close-up and thus produced "portraits of birds", in particular the rooster, a great source of inspiration."(in Émilie Vabre, "Prosper-Alphonse Isaac (1858-1924)", Nouvelles de l'estampe, 237 | 2011)Ca.1910Inventaire du Fonds Français : 19..

DER POLSTER, LE COUSSIN
KURZWEIL MAXIMILIAN ( 1867-1916 )Martha Kurzweil, his wife, seated on a couch.Very beautiful proof on fine Japanese paper published in the magazine: "Jahresmappedes Geselschaft für Vervielfältingende Kunst in Wien"Proof mounted on its original Japanese paper support.1903Novotny-Adolph: 428Wood engraving in five colors, yellow, green, brown, blue, black. There are variations in the print, our test belongs to "group B" Blue dress, green sofa, gray shade.Max Kurzweil was the co-founder of the Viennese Secession in 1897.He co-edited and illustrated the monthly magazine Ver sacrum from January 1898.Relatively early, in the early 1890s, a decisive change occurred in Kurzweil's life and art, when he came into contact with French painting. He worked in Paris from 1892 to 1894 and made regular summer stays in Concarneau where a colony of artists, including Signac and Andri, was established. What particularly marked him was the painting of Vuillard and Bonnard, and the black and white graphics of Vallotton. It was also at this time that he met Martha Guyot, daughter of a merchant and deputy mayor of Concarneau. The following summer, they became engaged and then married in 1895. The most important of Kurzweil's rare prints is this color woodcut. In Kurzweil's work, this woodcut most clearly embodies the personality of the artist and at the same time the essence of an artistic movement, even the essence of the face of a century. Much of what Art Nouveau expresses about the spirit of the age can be read in this sheet, the characteristic floral style found in both the cushion and the sofa pattern. But this "ornamental cheerfulness" is counterbalanced by the sobriety of the color of the dress and the position of his wife with her face hidden, buried, as if taking refuge in a melancholy which was gnawing at the artist...
